They call her the "P.I. Princess." It's 1947 and Allie Fortune is the only female (and probably the best) private investigator in New York City. Her work is a welcome distraction from her own past, and she's just been hired on by a client who isn't telling the whole truth. Mary Gordon's claims of innocence don't fit with her ransacked apartment, being shot at, and the two Soviet agents hot on her trail. Meanwhile, the FBI is working the case because a legendary and mysterious treasure has gone missing...again. The only catch for Allie is her new "partner" Jack, an attractive, single agent who knows how to make her smile. As Allie and Jack chase after the gold, they must contend with the Soviets, who also want the priceless treasure back--after all, they stole it fair and square. This is not a mystery novel that will have you on the edge of your seat trying to decipher what is going to happen next and who really is the bad guy, but it is a mystery novel that will touch your heart in a few places.
The main character Allie Fortune is a private detective in NYC post WWII. The book has an almost dual-plot where Allie is trying to hunt down an ancient treasure (this plot takes up the bulk of the action) while also reminiscing on the man she loved and maybe lost to the war.
A handsome and intelligent FBI ancient also graces the page of the book and a host of bad guys. While you may not be exactly sure until the final pages who the baddest of the bad guys are, you will find the ending somewhat predictable.
However, the subplot of Allie's lost love and her surprising (though hardly covered) forays into recovering a lost faith will keep you reading until the end.
Speaking of the ending, it is a bit of a cliffhanger...you will want to have Miss Match ready! ( )
