This is another of the Scarry greats; one of the best things is the consistent labeling/naming of random objects. It's so helpful for vocabulary building.

The book has information about the alphabet, numbers, colors, measuring, writing, etc. It's not really a story, but you follow a set of characters throughout the book. Not really enjoyable as a bedtime story, it's better suited for children who are independent enough to go through the book leisurely by themselves or with a patient adult. ( )

Het boek staat bomvol tekeningen en woordjes en later tekeningen met wat meer tekstregels. Alles in het boek draait om vermenselijkte dieren en het thema school. Poes Hukkie gaat naar de school van berenjuf Honing, waar hij de dag doorbrengt met zijn medeleerlingen: Wobbeltje konijn. Freddie Vos, Charlie Miereneter enz. Het is een kijk-leesboek: je weet niet waar je kijken moet, zoveel kleine tekeningetjes staan er van dingen en activiteiten met de bijpassende woorden erbij. Zo leer je de dagen van de week, tellen, klokkijken, meten en wegen, vormen, kleuren enz. Het geheel oogt wel grappig door de aansprekende illustraties in kleur. De teksten zijn echter erg opsommerig en bieden weinig belevingsmogelijkheden. Mits selectief en met begeleidingsmomenten kan het boek woordenschatverruimend werken in de kleuterklas. ( )

I loved these books when I was a child. Fun illustrations with cute, anthropomorphized animals. I credit these books with helping me learn to read - good for building vocabulary in small children. ( )
