A spellbinding collection of twelve classic fairy tales, with exquisite illustrations by Jane Ray - shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal. From double Carnegie Medal-winning author Berlie Doherty comes an enchanting collection of classic fairy tales, with magnificent illustrations by Jane Ray. The twelve stories in this collection - Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Beauty and the Beast, Rumpelstiltskin, Aladdin, the Fire-bird and Snow White - are among the best-loved fairy tales of all. These classic stories have enthralled children all over the world for hundreds of years; but rarely, if ever, have they been presented as perfectly as here. Berlie Doherty's graceful, direct prose combines with Jane Ray's intensely beautiful pictures to create a most memorable read. Here is fairy tale magic for many a lifetime. Lovely collection of classic fairy tales, accented with beautiful illustrations for the young imagination!

I liked this book of fairytales. First I liked the versions of the fairytales the author chose to retell. For instance in this version of Cinderella, Cinderella has no fairy godmother. “Hazel tree, hazel tree, if only you could help me.” Cinderella is helped by a hazel tree that provides her the stunning dress and slippers. Another thing I liked about this book was the wide variety of fairy tales the author chose to include. The ninth fairy tale in this book is titled, The Firebird which I had never heard of. “A long time ago in Russia there was a czar whose name was Bendei.” I liked that the author included fairy tales that might not be as well known. Overall this book exudes whimsy and magic as it retells classic fairy tales. ( )

This collection of fairytales is nicely put together. These are all of the classic stories that one remembers hearing as a child and has seen most of the movies for. This is a great book because it has all of the old stories in one place. A child could go back to this book and read different stories at different times. This book also included a lot of diversity which I really thought was interesting. For example, in Cinderella, she was caucasian and the prince was African American. When we typically heard of these stories we thought of two caucasian individuals. This was a great twist to the traditional stories that have been told. This book has pictures included which add to the story and help with understanding the messages. Overall, this book was well put together. I was able to see the different versions of the stories. The only problem I see with this text is that the endings to the stories are a little scary. Fro example, in little red riding hood, the wolf was cut open and rocks were put inside his belly and he woke up and died. This is a sad ending that a child might not take too well. Overall, I think that this is a great book that will allow younger children to hear the stories and older children to see the real meaning behind different stories. ( )

This is a very large collection of fairy tales that are spectacularly old. The author states that these are the oldest and best versions of these well-known fairy tales. I enjoyed them very much because most of them were interracial, which meant that an African American Princess would marry a European Prince and this made things more interesting. They both have different cultures and by bringing them together, we see how misunderstandings and conflict can break out. These stories teach kids that they can resolve conflict with just about anyone. Doherty is clever in making the book with the most classic fairy tales. It is a perfect storybook to read to children before they sleep (of course you wouldn't read it every day, instead once a day for twelve long nights).

My favorite story is the one about Hansel and Gretel. Hansel and Gretel are siblings whose mother tries to kill them. She gives them each a loaf of bread to venture far into the forest so that they can not find their way back. In their journey, they find a witch who wants to eat them. Gretel protects herself by acting stupid and ends up killing the witch by stuffing the witch into the oven. Kids who read this story can learn that the brother and sister had the willpower to solve their problems by perseverance and patience. ( )

It has been a long time since I have read an original version of many of these traditional fairytales. I enjoyed this book because it tried to stay true to the original tales. The stories are rich in detail but low in dialogue (except where necessary), giving them a feeling of an orally told bedtime story. Most of the stories are told from a third person omniscient point of view, so we get an idea what all the characters are thinking. The pictures are brightly colored and portray a wide variety of cultures, even in stories that I commonly think of as Eurocentric, and it was very interesting to gain this new visual perspective on these old tales. The pictures also do an excellent job of portraying the changes when a commoner becomes a princess through the course of the story. I enjoyed the little songs and rhymes that the author has included in some of the stories, where relevant to the plot. Each fairytale has a clear theme (such as “virtuosity is rewarded” or “be committed to your labors”). Overall, this book would be an excellent book for acquainting children of any age to traditional fairytales, and would especially be a wonderful bedtime storybook for children.
