Alex and Bill are unbeatable linemates on the Lakers hockey team: Alex is a tough grinder who sets up team captain Bill for goal after goal. When Bill's showing off becomes too much, however, Alex stops feeding him the puck. Soon, best friends become worst enemies, and the whole team turns against Alex. Alex is ready to quit the game, until he and Bill are forced to confront what's pushing them apart--both on and off the ice. Ice Attack is a story about the stresses of family life, and how friendship helps overcome them. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |

Part of the Canadian series 'Sports Stories,' this novel is built around the game of hockey. Twelve-year-old Alex plays on his junior high school team with his best friend Bill. To Alex's confusion, Bill starts to ignore him, then pick on him, and finally turns the team against him. Eventually it is revealed that Bill is lashing out because he's jealous of Alex's happy home life. Bill has been keeping his parents' separation a secret. Brought together by their mothers and the love of a dog, the boys are able to reconcile. Vandervelde deals realistically with adolescent bullying and the confused and hurt reaction of the victim. Those who have been ostracized by former friends will be able to relate to Alex. However, those with no hockey background may become confused and bored with the numerous, detailed descriptions of hockey games and practices. Hockey fans will appreciate the authenticity. 2002, James Lorimer. Ages 9 to 12.
