I just finished reading this book and I must say I really enjoyed it. The story was fast paced, the werewolf lore was interesting. I liked the main character, Jessie, and her relationship with Will. All of the characters were well written and seemed like real people. As some other readers have mentioned, some of the sex scenes seemed gratuitous, but the rest of the story was great. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series. ( )

Pretty disappointed by this book. After finishing nalini sing's psy changeling series it's just inadequate. Well organized, clean police story. Not too detailed but ok. Nevertheless the characters aren't just convincing enough. Romance and erotica fall too short. ( )

Lori Handeland has a way of bringing you into the story and hooking you. I really enjoyed this book and found it hard to put down. I loved Jessie's wise-cracking ways and how Cadotte always found her sometimes crash ways to be endearing. Finding out who the head werewolf was quite a shock and I like the fact that I was kept guessing through out the book. I would definitely recommend this to anyone, particularly those who enjoy reading paranormal romance. I am excited to read the next book in the series. ( )

Jessie McQuade is a cop in small town Miniwa, Wisconsin and she has some issues. Jessie is one of those people who have no life, because her job is her life. But Jessie’s cozy little routine of work, eat, sleep, repeat; is about to change. One night during her shift Jessie gets called out to check on a woman who hit a wolf. The wolf had bit the woman after she got out to check to see if it was okay and then it had ran off into the woods (the wolf not the woman.) So now Jessie has to go into the woods to try and track down the wolf to see if it has rabies. But instead of a wolf Jessie finds a naked man roaming around.

Soon after that, Jessie is assigned to help some old German guy track down the crazy wolves. According to him, the wolves are infected with a new kind of super rabies that makes them smarter and when it bites someone that person goes crazy. This is a serious problem seeing as the wolves are going out of their way to bite people. Oh, and the “rabies” may be somehow connected with the Nazi’s. So now Jessie has to go stomping around in the woods with a cranky old old man hunting wolves, before they infect more people. But there’s even more to the story than everyone’s telling her and she’s determined to find out everything before she ends up dead.

Nazi created werewolves have invaded small town Miniwa, WI. Sounds corny, huh? Well it isn’t, because somehow Handeland manages to pull it off. I loved this book.

Jessie isn’t the kind of heroine that all fuzzy creatures adore and love, instead she’s the kind that goes into the woods and shoots them for dinner. She’s one of those deeply independent heroines. She’s one of those rare heroines who knows exactly what she’s doing and also knows her limits. Sure she’s a little rough around the edges, but that’s what I liked most about her. And that’s also why Will works so well for her.

Will has some issues too, after all he’s constantly walking around nude, I swear I can count on one hand how many times that man had clothes on in this book. But I was really disappointed that we didn’t get a deeper look into Will’s past, but that’s kind of hard to do when Will is supposed to be Jessie’s prime suspect. And you know the writing is good when it’s a romance and you know who the hero is, but you still have your doubts as to what side he’s on.

But what really impressed me about this book was that I liked the bad guys. Handeland didn’t make them insanely evil, in fact she gave them a lot of traits that I liked and at the end I even felt a little bad for them. ( )
