When his father was killed in the war and his mother had to sell their family farm to make ends meet. She goes to a factory to find work and leaves Caleb with the Shakers. During his time with the Shakers Caleb hears these songs and he writes them down to put together a book while working at a print shop. This story teaches readers all about what its like to be a Shaker. ( ) This book describes the lives of Shakers in the 1860s through a ficitional character named Caleb. At first the setting acts as the protagonist against the main characters; it’s after the Civil War, his father was killed in the war, his mother has had to sell the family farm to make ends meet, she goes to a factory to find work, and leaves Caleb in the care of Shakers because she can’t properly take care of him. The setting is than used to lift the boy and have him overcome his trials. He is raised by the Shakers and finds worship in work.
