These are lovingly drawn sketches of little nobodies who have been deeply affected by loss during World War 1. When there is just dialog, Barrie resorts to the shorthand of script writing, but reverts back to prose when he wants to reveal more than can be heard. His writing is completely charming. I pity those who think they've read him, but actually only "know" the story of Peter Pan.

Three nice old ladies and a criminal, who is even nicer, are discussing the war over a cup of tea. The criminal, who is the hostess, calls it a dish of tea, which shows that she comes from Caledonia, but that is not her crime.
