Het thema van dit boek is de vraag of men in wanhoop kan leven en toch niet willen sterven.
Misschien ligt het aan mij, maar ik vind Lucio, de hoofdpersoon en verteller van het verhaal een merkwaardige en eigenlijk vervelende zelfingenome man. Hij lijdt aan grote en diepe wanhoop en vraagt zich dus echt af of hij de wanhoop kan stabiliseren en leven of dat hij zijn leven moet beëindigen. Hij ontmoet op de boot van Napels naar Capri een Duits echtpaar, de Müllers. Een dikke oudere man en een jonge ongelukkig uitziende vrouw, Beate. Lucio wordt op slag verliefd op de ongelukkig ogende Beate en meent in haar ogen ook liefde voor hem te zien. Ze gaan allemaal naar hetzelfde pension en in de eetzaal zitten ze naast elkaar. Beate en Lucio doen niet anders dan woordeloze boodschappen uitzenden naar elkaar en zeer snel weet Lucio dat Beate de liefde van zijn leven is en dat dit wederzijds is. Beate geeft hem een boek van Kleist waarin staat hoe hij en zijn vriendin samen zelfmoord plegen. Hij concludeert dat Beate dat ook wil, met hem.
De man van Beate, Alois, lijkt een nazi, hij dwingt Lucio min of meer tot de Italiaanse fascistengroet.
Als Beate en haar man na een paar dagen verdwenen zijn ontmoet Lucio Trude en Paula, Trude is de frivole tweelingzus van Beate, zij is vrijgevochten, partijlid, nazi en wil seks met hem. Paula is de moeder van de 2 jonge vrouwen. Trude en Lucio experimenteren samen een beetje met seks en Trude sterkst erg de draak met haar zus, vindt haar een aanstelster met haar zelfmoordpogingen (al 3)
en -plannen. Uiteindelijk komt Paula vertellen dat alles een grote grap is, dat Trude niet bestaat, dat Beate en zij minnaars zijn en actrices. Dat Alois inderdaad de man van Beate is, maar zij niet van hem houdt.
Het einde is dat Beate en Paula samen sterven door cyaankali te slikken. Dit na het nieuws van een mislukte aanslag op Hitler waarbij Alois was betrokken en gefusilleerd is. De nacht van de lange messen was dat.
In de weinige informatie over Moravia kom ik tegen dat hij een antifascist is die seksualiteit en filosofische vraagstubehandelt in zijn werk.
Dit boek is van 1982, dus nog niet zo oud. Ik vind het wel een intrigerend verhaal, wel goed geschreven ook, zeker, maar de aannames 270 bladzijden lang van diepe liefde tussen mensen die elkaar niet spreken of het steeds hebben over d E liefde, de seks, het doodgaan en de spagaat als je verliefd bent op een tweeling, ik vind het een beetje tè. "She gave an affirmative signal with her eyes, as if to tell me, yes, I had to respond to the salute. Was it an order or a plea? I couldn't have said. Surely, at that moment, it would be an act of complicity at a level far deeper than that of political opportunism. But what most convinced me to act in a fashion so opposed to my convictions was the thought that she was asking me to do it 'for love of her.' Somehow, with that affirmative sign of her eyes and head, she was saying to me: Yes, only for a moment, to please me, become a Fascist."

A moody young man locks eyes with a beautiful young woman. He believes that she's possessed by the same despair that torments him, the despair that he longs to "stabilize" (by which he maybe means "write about it in his novel"). He falls in love instantly (as the moody young men so often do), but the woman is on holiday with her husband, and so the two embark upon a bizarre courtship consisting of glances, stares, and underlined passages of Nietzsche.

In general, I have little tolerance for the moody young men and their infatuations, and I tire quickly of the breathless descriptions of the stunning creatures that so captivate them. But this book is so much more than that--what begins as a coup de foudre evolves, through Moravia's steady, elegant (and even surprising) storytelling, into an exploration of psychology, desire, and politics in the darkening shadow of fascism. It's very twentieth-century and very modernist in a lot of ways, but it's still surprising and uncomfortably real.

"È possibile vivere nella disperazione e non desiderare la morte?" Occupato da questo problema esistenziale - peraltro già risolto dal Werther di Goethe che aveva scelto, appunto, la morte - Lucio, giovane intellettuale, approda in un giugno già estivo dell'anno 1934 a Capri, lontano dagli orrori della storia. In Italia il fascismo imperversa già da alcuni anni ed è del '33 l'avvento al potere di Hitler in Germania ma per Lucio, antifascista solo perché insofferente alle masse (e il fascismo, come lui stesso dice, è regime di massa), è più urgente portare a compimento il singolare tentativo di "stabilizzare" la propria disperazione. Un compito che egli svolge con sofisticata determinazione, aiutato dall'incontro casuale con Beate, tedesca, che gli permette di chiarire il meccanismo profondo del suo intento e di sfuggire infine alla morte. Dopo La vita interiore,ritratto della borghesia degli anni settanta "omicida e suicida per odio a se stessa", il Moravia degli anni ottanta affronta il tema della disperazione legata alla condizione umana. Ed è proprio nel contrasto tra il pessimismo esistenziale del protagonista e la tragedia politica incombente e insieme distante -realtà di tutti i tempi che la disperazione rivela, al di là dei fantasmi individuali, la sua universale presenza. si può stabilizzare uno stato esistenziale di disperazione? il protagonista cerca la risposta e arriva alla conclusione che no, non è possibile, perche' puo' sempre arrivare inatteso, imprevedibile, indesiderato quasi, un barlume di felicità che "destabilizza" lo stato di disperazione. ( )

הסיפור מזכיר במידה רבה את המאגוס של פואלר אבל הרבה יותר פוליטי ממנו. ( )
