The TARDIS and a trading starship both arrive on a planet close to an energy-emitting white hole. The Doctor and his companions intent on discovering more about the territory soon realize this is no ordinary planet. This is a place where fairytales exist, but with no guarentee of a happy ending.

An Eighth Doctor novel, the Doctor, Anji and Fitz are trapped on a Fairy Tale world where wishes are power and the planet itself is alive.

A rather odd Eighth Doctor Adventure, with the Doctor, Fitz and Anji trapped in a fantasy world where fairy-tales (hence the 'Grimm' of the title) are more or less true. Some good Anji moments in particular, and a few nice descriptive passages, but this has been done better elsewhere. ( )

Grimm Reality is an Eighth Doctor Adventure, with companions Anji and Fitz. Anji and Fitz are probably one of my favorite TARDIS teams. While I did think the book was a little muddled at times, it was pretty enjoyable. The TARDIS lands on a world of fairy tales. There are wishing boxes and witches and giants and sleeping princesses in castles and other fairy tale things. But it's mostly the real kind of fairy tale, where people get eaten by wolves and the kindly woodcutter never comes along, because children need to know about the horrors of the world.

About as soon as the crew exits the TARDIS, the whole thing is swallowed by a bunch of trees. So right off the TARDIS is rendered unavailable, and then by about thirty pages later the Doctor, Anji, and Fitz are all split up. A traditional Doctor Who plot! Anji is even kidnapped! And then the aliens come in. Not that the planet isn't alien, but a bunch of space explorers show up, on a ship crewed by three different races. Human, insectoid, and something looking like pink hippos. They think the planet has something they want, so various members of the crew are sent down to get it. The "magical" aspects of the planet collide with technology, and the whole thing turns into a mess.

Can the Doctor save the day while being chased by giants? Can Fitz find the Doctor and Anji and figure out what's going on with the wolf pelt he's wearing? Can Anji get out of servitude to a household of mean sisters and maybe win a beauty competition? Did that one guy really turn into a fox? Will the princess ever wake? All good questions! All answered in the book! ( )

To my daughter Morgan, who in her identity of 'Superlady' has defeated more 'Daddy Monsters From the Swamp' than any other superhero. With thanks to: Kelly Hale, obviously and most heartily. Watch her, kiddies: she can write. To everyone who's helped or suggested something I've ignored. With acknowledgements to – spot them if you can – the worlds of Grimm, Tolkien, Baum, ER Eddison and Richmal Crompton, not necessarily in that order.- SBJ
For Jackie, petting bumblebees in heaven. Thanks to my mother and family for always being there even when I wasn't 'all there', and to Simon, my son, who has lived with a writer all his life, poor thing. Hello to my man in Stari Grad, Sheahan for listening. Thanks to Bob's Harem for happily embracing whatever I'm working on and helping to make it better, and to the advisory committee – pussycat boy Paul Dale Smith, 'No Pyjamas' Henry Potts, and the Yanks – God bless America – Jonathan Dennis and Ian McIntire. Also Mark Rushford and Amsel Zivkovich for the cheering. And to Women Writing Who workshop (do it again!). But mostly, thanks to the Impeccable One.- Kelly Hale

Curiously, almost languidly, Anji turned the pages of the ancient untitled book she'd found in a carved box deep in the TARDIS.
