Based on an actual memoir written by Maritcha Remond Lyons, who was born and raised in New York City, this poignant story tells what it was like to be a black child born free during the days of slavery. Everyday experiences are interspersed with hight-point moments, such as visiting the U.S.'s first world's fair. Also included are the Draft Riots of 1863, when Maritcha and her siblings fled to Brooklyn while her parents stayed behind to protect their home. The book concludes with her fight to attend a whites-only high school in Providence, Rhode Island, and her triumphant victory, making her the first black person in its graduating class. The book includes photographs of Maritcha, her family, and friends, as well as archival and contemporary maps, photographs, and illustrations.… (más)

Use: learning about Maritcha.
Genre:biography.
Media:photographs. info graphics.pencil. newspaper clippings.

This biography is clear and well written. The photographs are beautiful. Maritcha had a fairly easy life growing up. Her family was semi-wealthy. They lived in New York. The Civil War was going on during her lifetime. There were attacks and riots when the Civil War draft happened. They were forced to relocate to Rhode Island. She wanted to go to school but racism was alive so they had to challenge the school board and won. Eventually Maritcha became an author, leader, feminist, and civics teacher. ( )

This book was inspired by a typewritten memoir the author discovered at the Schomburg Center. Maritcha grew up in lower Manhattan where her family ran a boarding house that was part of the city's "striving class of blacks in the mid 1800s." Maritcha loved school and study. But a violent riot over the Civil War draft chased thousands of blacks from NYC, including Maritcha's family which settled in Rhode Island. The never-married Maritcha went on to become a teacher in Brooklyn.

Based off of her memoir, this book tells the story of Maritcha, a young African American girl, who was forced out of her childhood neighborhood during riots. This story shows how a young girl can strive for so many great things.

This book is about Maritcha, an African-American girl growing up in the nineteenth century. The book tells of Maritcha's experiences growing up in New York City. Life was normal until the Draft Riots, which caused Maritcha's family to have to relocate to Rhode Island. Defying all odds, Maritcha was the first African-American girl to graduate from her high school and became a respected educator.

Genre Critique: This is an in-depth biography that thoroughly recounts Maritcha's life. This book is written based off of Maritcha's memoir that Maritcha created using keepsakes and memories. Photographs of Maritcha's life and family is also included in this book. This biography is about Maritcha but readers will also gain insight from the time period and events that were occurring. For example, readers will learn about the draft riots and the effect they had on American families.

Media: Photographs, drawing, painting, pictures of historical artwork
