William Leckie, this author is not to be confused with the Marine who wrote "Helmet For My Pillow", a set of WWII Pacific War Memoirs. The 9th and 10th Cavalry regiments were black up to the level of non-comms, and saw a great deal of service in the states of New Mexico and Arizona, in the dying days of the Apache wars. They were tough and reliable, and created an enviable combat record, irksome to those resisting integration of Black people into American life. ( )
