Voice from Afar: Poems of Peace is a collection of poems that revolve around war, fighting, hope and peace. These poems are very touching and teaches readers reality about another part of our world. So poems may be too much for younger readers because of the content and illustrations of war and blood. But, sometimes it's necessary for students to learn this material. When learning about war, you could read this collection of poems and show a softer side to it. I would use this to read to my future students. Some of these poems actually make you feel thankful and make you tear up. The word choices were great and the author did well making me feel empathetic.The illustrations were done very well and are very beautiful. I ( )

This book is not for the younger reader as the thoughts and realities of life in a war zone are shared, with paintings that look as though they are covered in blood. Instructors may choose to use this with older students who are learning from a classmate who has lived in an area where war is a reality--it would be a powerful took for creating empathy and learning about another part of the world. The last few poems truly do speak to peace, and instructors may choose to read only from the second half of the book as they share lessons of hope and resilience.

This was an interesting peace poem book. It was well written and illustrated, however it was not in my taste of writing. I'm sure many will enjoy this work, and I would recommend it for youngsters in grades 2-5. ( )
