Compared to the preceding Bendis-penned arcs, some of Brubaker's run can't help but seem a little forgettable to me. It started out good, though -- the first one (Devil in Cell Block D) was very good, and while the second felt more lacklustre, it ended with a very strong finish. The (connected) third and fourth, however, didn't completely land with me, even as their conclusion (somthing Brubaker clearly does well) again felt both undeniably emotional and strong. So it was with joy I realised this story was finally back to form -- a standalone narrative placed beautifully in the on-going character arcs, it sees Matt Murdock the hero, the lawyer, the vigilante and the tormented soul all wrapped up in one package, which is how it should be. It has everything; shady conspiracy, harrowing emotional private life, a (probably) innocent man on death row, the works. Two thumbs up for this one. ( )

Matt Murdock, after accepting that his wife Milla has been made permanently insane by a villain's toxin, has retreated into the black comfort of his Daredevil identity. His co-worker Dakota North attempts to draw him out of his self-punishment by steering him to an innocent man on Death Row. And by golly, after some fits and starts, it works. Good story, good artwork by Michael Lark & Stefano Gaudiano after the mediocre art from the first chapter, by Paul Azaceta. ( )

I enjoyed this Daredevil collection more than any in recent memory. Matt Murdock continues to be mopey and self-involved, but friends jar him out of his stupor and get him involved in a case. I thought the mystery and the supporting cast were done well, and it was great to see Daredevil back to form. He’s spent far too much time mooning schmoopily over the dreadful character Milla. Was her absence what made this book so much better than its predecessors? I think so. ( )
