Since the previous edition of this work was published, there have been numerous developments in materials, technology and mechanization. This new edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect these changes. In addition, the conservation of fish stocks and protection of the environment have become very serious issues and an extra chapter, Fisheries and the Environment is included. Another chapter on Research in Fisheries has also been added and, in view of its importance, the chapter on sports fishing has also been substantially enlarged.
