Does "Math Wiz" have to equal "Sports Dud"? Marty Malone thinks no problem is too complicated for him. Then he starts third grade--and learns that being a math wiz won't stop him from getting picked last in gym class. Kids like tom Ballan are so much better at sports that Marty will never be able to catch up. Trying harder doesn't work. Trying to get out of gym doesn't work. But what if Marty makes a friend in class? And what if that friend is a math wiz, too?… (más)

Marty Malone is a middle school math wiz who turns everything in the world into a math problem. Although, he is a math wiz he struggles in P.E. and quickly learns being good at math will not get him picked first in P.E. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because of the use of math in the story, pictures, and discuss struggles students face. ( )

The story follows Marty, a boy who's great at math, but struggles with his gym class. I give this story a 4 star rating because, as someone who also really didn't like gym and was uncomfortable when there, I really felt for Marty. The book also does a good job of showing how math is present in our every day lives This book is a good read for middle school students who feel insecure about their passion for math, or any other subject. This is about a little boy who struggles in P.E., but loves math. Throughout the book he tries to find ways to get subtracting his problems instead of adding. I would recommend this book to my students, because it is a way to see how math is in our everyday lives and how is can be used to solve our everyday problems. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars because it is an extremely short read, so the more advanced students might not be as excited in reading it. ( )

In this book a young school boy named Marty is really good at math, but terrible in gym class. He is so bad at gym that he is always picked last. He spend most of his time, when not doing math, trying to find a way to escape gym class. I gave this book a three star because although he found a solution to his problem you never want a kid to try and get out of something just because they are not comfortable. I do think this book would be good for kids because it is about finding people who enjoy the same things as you, but also that not everyone is the same and may have different interests than others.
