His mother becomes frsutrated with his noise level and wishes she liked noise. Sandy's father takes him away from the house for the morning to visit his cousin. Sandy's mother is excited for the peace and quiet but she slowly realizes she misses her little boy and his noises. Sandy returns with cousin Roger to play for the afternoon. Roger is VERY loud and yells and runs more than Sandy. When Roger leaves Sandy tells his mother that Roger is too loud and he promises to be quiet from then on. Mother tells Sandy that sometimes noise is good and sometimes quiet is good. In the house, all the mother asks for is some peace and quiet. However, when little Sandy leaves for a little while, the mother realizes that she misses him. When he returns and listens to his cousin's loud noise, he learns that being quiet is sometimes better than being loud. This book would be great to use when teaching an onomatopoeia lesson. The Quiet Mother and the Noisy Little Boy by Charlotte Zolotow (1989) This book is about a little boy, Sandy, who makes too much noise. One day he visits his cousin. This makes the house too quite and his mother misses him. Later, the cousins go back to Sandy's house. Sandy's cousin is even louder than him. This makes Sandy realize the importance of not being too loud. Now Sandy and his mother are happy. This book would be appropriate for the lower grades. It is an intermediate level, picture book. The pictures are illustrated with water colors. This book would be good to read to a noisy class to help them realize the importance of being quiet sometimes. This book is about a boy who loves noise and his mother wishes she did. He goes to his cousins house and she realizes she misses the noise. Then the cousin comes to their house and he is even noisier. When his cousin leaves he realizes how loud the cousin was and decides to not be noisy. The mother explains that both noise and quiet are good at different times for different things. Sandy was a very noisy boy who loved to make noise with whatever he was doing. His mother often thought she wished she liked noise. One day, Sandy's cousin, Roger, came to visit. He was so much noisier than Sandy.
