It's still worth reading, but don't expect it to be anything more than what it is --- a romance novel.

This book is one in a series of three and I had expected it to be rendered with the same care for detail and character development as its predecessors. Unfortunately, that proved not to be the case. The books are written by different authors and this one obviously did not bother researching the role of the Texas Rangers or their command structure, much less how they work with other law enforcement. As that was an integral part of the plot, the ignorance really showed.

On the other hand, the author took a great deal of care studying how forensics --- real forensics, not television forensics work --- and had spent time researching things like how evidence is collected and chain of custody for that evidence.

The characters are mildly interesting but suffer a distressing similarity to the first set of characters in the series, without the intrigue or the empathy. It's plain that they're stereotypes and the entire plot is a tired cliche --- an heiress who witnessed something she shouldn't have is being stalked by someone who wants her dead.

If romance is what you want, this will do just fine but I had come to expect better from the series. ( )
