I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it only missing out on 5 stars due to being a bit repetitive but that is the nature of a diary. I have even tried out a couple of the recipes from this book which work great. ( ) An interesting little book - the diary of an 18th century farmer's wife, with lots of domestic detail. Quite witty in places, it gives a feeling for what life was like for a relatively well-off country family. BUT, there is one problem with it. There is a good possibility that it is a fake! The introduction covers the theory that it was written in the 20th century, and more can be found on the internet. Certainly, the "original" does not seem to have survived. This doesn't affect its readability, but just leaves you wondering if it is worth reading, certainly from a historical perspective. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
In 1796 young farmer's wife, Anne Hughes, decided to start a diary to "set down all that I do every day" and so, for 13 months we learn of Anne's day to day life, of the butter maken that sometimes "was longe time cummin" of collecting honey, pudden making, making merrie and of all the social activities and hard work that was then the lot of a farmer's wife. This is an extraordinary document, rediscovered in the 1930s, written by a young woman who lives and breathes in its pages. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
