The first thing one notices about this book is the beautiful illustrating job-- it is truly a work of art! It is also a great informational text that is very accessible to readers. The book includes paragraph-length descriptions, as well as short fact snippets, which keeps the reader interested. This book is also a read-along book, which makes it a great option to use with ELLs and students that need extra scaffolding reading independently. The book is also labeled with section titles (i.e. "An Elephant's Skin"), which helps the reader stay on-track! I love how this book marries beautiful artwork with good, informative facts. I would use this book as a tool for students doing research on elephants, as well as an example of what different informational text features look like. I liked Elephants of Africa for two reasons. First, the author wrote with simple, informative language. The tone was perfect for the target audience (students ages K-2). For example, the author writes, "A herd is a group of the same kind of animals. A herd of African elephants makes its way across the bast savanna." Obviously, the author writes about elephants in a way younger elementary school students can understand. At the same time, the author includes vibrant illustrations to keep the reader engaged. These illustrations include basic maps of Africa, elephant food, and the desert in which the elephants live. The illustrations are made with water color, colored pencil with a pen overlay. My only complaint is that the illustrations all look very similar. I would have preferred a bit more variety in terms of color and picture content. Overall this was an excellent book. The big picture of this book is that elephants are threatened by human settlements. Humans should take care to respect and preserve these beautiful and intelligent creatures. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
