A Primer on Worship and Reformation runs only 72 pages. The author, Douglas Wilson, proposes that true change begins, not with a process or an idea, but through faithful worship. Wilson confronts problems such as cheesy and threadbare worship and pietistic individualism. He believes that the contemporary Church is in pathetic condition – not because we lack the right techniques, but because we have sinned our ways into this condition. When Wilson says that we need to repent, “specifically of our man-centered gospel and our man-centered response to that gospel,” I add a hearty amen. Wilson is a gadfly. May his tribe increase. At 76 pages, Doug Wilson's call for evangelical Christians to recover faithful worship is more a tract or a manifesto than a book.Wilson's basic argument is that churches, and particularly American evangelical churches, will be impotent at affecting serious change in their members and in the culture until they get serious about God and the manner in which they worship Him. Thus, his call is a call to the reformation of worship, which for Wilson means a return to a high church, Puritan, liturgical form. Wilson focuses on the need to recover meaning in the sacraments, an understanding of preaching as the "thundering" communication of the Word of God, an appreciation for the use of the Psalms in worship, and so on. And while not every reader will agree with his prescriptions, Wilson's critique of the state of evangelicalism, namely how it has deconstructed and de-sacramentalized itself into silliness, is spot on. This slim volume seeks to call the modern American church back to a more robust, God-centered worship, leaving behind the entertainment-mindedness that has pervaded the church up until now. Wilson makes some great arguments here. Like any of his other writings, there are certain areas in which I disagree with him, but overall his thesis is sound and his conclusion, that changes to our worship which put the focus more on God and less on ourselves will impact every area of our lives, is true and good.I highly recommend this book to pastors, elders, worship directors and other church leaders as well as those thinking of entering the pastorate and thoughtful church members. With the exception of his chapter on communion frequency I think he does a fine job of defending a Biblical understanding of worship. I had high hopes for the chapter on communion as well (I'm looking for someone to convince me that weekly communion is a more faithful practice than less frequent celebration) but I was disappointed. Wilson can be a bit harsh at times but these are weighty matters and I'm not sure I blame him for naming names and being direct. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
You Say You Want a Reformation? It is no secret that our world desperately needs change. Politicians know this and use it to collect votes. Journalists exploit it to sell newspapers and magazines. Advertisers, to sell everything else. Each of these groups (and countless others) spend their lives working to convince others that they hold the key to a better country, a better life, a better future. But what exactly is this change we all long for? And how can it ever come about? A Primer on Worship and Reformation proposes that true change begins, not with a process or an idea, but through faithful worship. To witness true global change -- true reformation -- we must first pray the Lord that we would see worship at the center of life. The truth is that when the Word is faithfully preached, even the gates of hell tremble. When the Psalms are sung, the meek inherit the earth. When the church celebrates at the Lord's Table, those who mourn are comforted. If we learn these lessons and believe them to be true, we will find that through renewed worship God brings change to every facet of our lives. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |

Excellent book on Worship, and it's nice to see a book that I can agree with on the subject of Worship. ( )
