Set in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands in the 1840’s, this book explores the conflict between Pakeha and Māori. Jacky, who is part Māori, has been brought up by missionaries. His friends include a tough young Pakeha, Noah, and a gentle Māori from the mission, Matiu. Jacky wants to find out more about his Māori side but Māori chief Hone Heke is challenging British authority. There is a constant threat of conflict and it is inevitable that the friends will get caught up in it. A good historical novel in which readers will be brought to a greater understand of this period in New Zealand history.
