On a return trip from Germany, Monk and Natalie stop over in Paris. They visit the catacombs, a vast, underground cavern in the center of the city lined with millions of human bones. Monk picks up a skull and announces that the person was murdered. Most of the bodies came from a battlefield, but Monk believes the wound that killed this man came from a modern weapon made in the last few years. He thinks someone hid a recent murder victim among the ancient bones. As Monk starts to investigate the crime, he uncovers another murder that involves a society of "dumpster divers," people who live commerce-free off the waste of society. It might just be the last straw in Monk's visit to Paris.… (más)

With things neatly tied up in Germany, Adrian and Natalie head for Paris where Monk, after some initial reluctance to take a vacation, is looking forward to touring the city’s sewers. But his discovery of a murder as the two tour the catacombs pulls the intrepid detective into a new mystery that has ties to San Francisco and brings both Captain Stottlemeyer and Lieutenant Disher to Paris.

Picking up where “Mr. Monk Goes to Germany” left off, the story brings together all the expected characters for a hysterical romp through the streets of Paris with Monk . . . foibles, phobias, and all . . . hot on the trail of the murderer. This seventh book in the series is pure fun and laughter, a great read for everyone, not just fans of the series.

3.5 stars rounded to 4. Another fun episode in the Monk series. Monk is in Paris after being tricked by Natalie into going. He works with the French police to solve murders while Natalie tries to enjoy a vacation. This book was very well-researched and gave lots of information on the sewer system of Paris and the Freegan movement. The storyline was fun as well as interesting. For those who ROO (Read out of order), I recommend reading the previous book Mr. Monk Goes to Germany first as there are a lot of references to the prior plotlines.

Enjoyable as most of the books in the series are. Setting in France and the catacombs -- makes one want to visit. ( )

Typical Monk observations, and some great fun along the way, but these foreign stories just feel a tad forced to me.
I prefer Adrian on home turf. ( )
