Underwear can be practical, it can be lucky, it can be just plain bizarre. And just one mention of it can make you giggle or blush. But if you really want to laugh out loud, take a step back in time and check out what people in past centuries used to cover up "down there". With uproarious illustrations this book sets out to uncover the truth behind underwear.… (más)

The history of underwear is an unexpected subject. Comical illustrations avoid banality while still keeping readers entertained and giggling. I would recommend this book for a younger audience, as the illustrations are more enjoyable than the text, which is a mixture of random, dubious information that, while still fun and informative, lacks the sense of authority that can be found in other books on clothing. Quite cute. Rather embarrassing to admit: my knowledge of the history of underwear already surpasses this book. (I read too much.)

SAMPLE PARAGRAPH

"N" Day was May 15th, 1940, the day when nylon stockings first went on sale to the public. Across the country [USA] crowds waited for hours outside stores. Even though each customer could only buy one pair, three quarters of a million pairs of nylons sold out at once.

I loved this book. At first glance it's just a book about underwear, however it goes so much deeper. Without noticing, you are getting a "brief" summary of history. Especially when it comes to women's underthings. You can see the changes in freedoms and roles of women in society by the changes in their under garments. This would be a fun book to start teaching kids about suffrage and feminist concepts that have evolved and why. ( )

“Underwear: What We Wear Under There”, by Ruth Freeman Swain, Illustrated by John O’Brien is about underwear all the way back to Ancient times. It tells the reader all about the different shapes and sizes of underwear people wore in the past.

This book will have the audience laughing or blushing. This story of underwear gives a great amount of information about underwear during the time period of Ancient times to the early 1970’s. The illustrations follow the text and give the reader humorous examples of underwear worn at that particular time. It also gives a timeline of the brief history of underwear at the back of the book, great for those researchers of underwear. The recommended reading age is 9 to 12 years of age. Readers older than 12 years of age would also enjoy this comical story of underwear through the ages. This book will entertain your audience thoroughly. ( )
