(fonte: Morandini)

(Mutiny on the Bounty, Usa 1962, col, 179') Lewis Milestone.

==============================================

Christian: It’s alright, Mills. It wasn’t your fault. Bligh left his mark on all of us.

Hollywood has never been a sane place (sometimes to a great effect and lasting value), but it seems that in the early 1960s it was especially insane. Where did they get the money, not to mention the time and the energy, for all those full-colour, three-hour, no-expense-spared epics, I wonder? No wonder some of them turned out somewhat unsatisfactory.

Considering all the rumours about delays on the set and tensions in the star trio (Richard Harris received a star billing thanks to his Irish cheek), this movie is surprisingly good. The Bligh-Christian collision, which is of course the crux of the story, is extensively worked out and nicely set against what almost certainly was the other chief reason for the mutiny, “the allurements of dissipation” in Bligh’s own words. But the writing is uneven and so is the acting. Christian is a campy, foppish and sarcastic dandy, in the end abruptly transformed into a tragic hero. Brando seems bored with the character, a flaw that would have been fatal with a better script and a less charismatic actor. Bligh is the usual mixture of ambition and sadism, but subtler and more complex than the one Laughton had to deal with in 1935. Howard is excellent throughout, resorting to no histrionics yet almost acting Brando off the deck in their joint scenes. Too bad Bligh’s epic voyage of survival is completely cut. As for Harris and the fine supporting cast, they feel rather superfluous.

If the movie feels slow and lacklustre now and then, you can always enjoy the lavish spectacle. The visual side remains spectacular even today. Many far younger movies look far worse than this one. Neither the Bounty nor Tahiti has ever looked better on the screen, not even in the 1984 version. And Tarita is a dish, of course; can’t blame Brando there; I would have married her too. On the whole, however, this is the weakest of three great Bounty movies, not because it plays fast and loose with the few historical facts, but because it substitutes talkiness and ostentation for them.
