Awful. Just unreadable fantasy dreck. ( )

I was first drawn to this novel by the original cover design. It looked like it would fit right in with my taste of fantasy novels. However, I was soon proved wrong. I hate to put spoilers in reviews but I absolutely can't avoid mentioning some major ones that happen in the first couple of chapters.

The beginning of the book was promising enough, starting us in the middle of a battle to defend a keep. We're introduced to a band of mercenaries: The Raven. Your classic set of warriors, and mage. The Unknown Warrior is the leader of this merry band.

Fast-forward a couple of chapters and a loss on the Raven's side, and one of the most charismatic characters, Sirendor, is killed by an assassin's poisoned blade. I immediately thought, "Well there goes my favourite character, I guess I'll just have to make The Unknown my favourite. He's mysterious and cool. Yeah, that'll work." Then BOOM! a few chapters later the Unknown has his throat ripped out by a pack of demon hounds! This is not an okay thing to do to a reader. The rest of the characters were boring and rather flat. My favourite characters were killed off right at the beginning, and most of the story is simply filled with exposition so that the reader can even try to understand what is going on.

Definitely not one of my favourite books. I hardly ever walk away from a book half finished, but I just couldn't handle it any more. Of course, it's always up to the individual to make a final decision. ( )

Ce bouquin « Aubemort » est le premier tome d’une trilogie, « les Chroniques des Ravens » écrite par James Barclay dont je n’ai rien lu d’autre de lui pour l’instant.

C’est de l’heroic fantasy pure et dure. Voici le contexte : les Ravens forment un groupe de mercenaires qui s’est créé il y a une dizaine d’années. Ils ont tout fait, tout enduré, ce sont des vieux de la vieille. Ils sont connus de bien des commandants puisqu’ils ont pu offrir leur service à tout le monde ou presque. C’est un petit groupe soudé, des frères d’armes qui agissent comme un seul homme sur le champ de bataille. En plus, ils ont un code d’honneur qui les empêche d’assassiner, ils ne tuent que leurs ennemis et ce sur le champ de bataille. Bref, des bons gars… Le hasard a fait qu’ils fassent une rencontre spéciale lors de leur dernier contrat, un mage appartenant à un collège de magie de mauvaise réputation (entendez « qui n’hésite pas à tuer et qui n’a pas d’honneur »…) qui les impliquera dans la résolution d’une grande menace. En effet, de vils sorciers bannis il y a des siècles de ce monde reviennent pour se venger en unissant de viles tribus barbares contre les gentils contre le peuple civilisé. Seuls les Ravens semblent pouvoir aider le mage (qui ne semble pas si méchant) à sauver le monde…Zzz… Zzz… Zzz… Zzz…Vous êtes encore là ^^ ? Moi je n’ai pas le choix, j’ai encore le bouquin à finir, vous comprenez ma peine…Bon, j’avoue, tout n’est pas à jeter notamment le fait que le récit est bien rythmé. Les scènes s’enchainent plutôt bien, le cheminement de l’intrigue est plausible. Autant dans « le Royaume de Saramir », je me sentais un peu brusqué par l’arrivée inopinée de protagonistes, ben autant là non (vous en rêviez de cette chute…). Le tout me fait énormément penser à une bonne partie de jeu de rôles avec ses accrocs et ses réussites.

Mais bon, ça ne fait pas tout… Les personnages sont traités de manière caricaturale ou carrément pas traités du tout, j’en viendrais presque à regretter ce chouineur de FitzChevalerie (« L’assassin royal » de Robin Hobb). Quand au scénario… C’est un peu comme « Le huitième sortilège » de Pratchett mais en se prenant au sérieux. Pratchett aurait parodié « Aubemort » avant que ce roman soit écrit. ‘Tain il est fort Pratchett, il me scie… Donc une version sérieuse d’une parodie, ce n’est pas ce qu’on appelle un nanar ? Oui, voilà, c’est le mot. « Aubemort », c’est un nanar littéraire ( )

Straight up, no frills high fantasy. Reads almost like a narration of a video game. Its done just a bit better than many of that kind of novel, though. These will be the kind of book I read if I have nothing else of interest around. ( )
