Mary Poppins and the House Next Door benefits from an erudite and delightful foreword by a professor of classics, putting Mary Poppins into Dionysian perspective and explaining the framework of each episode in these terms. I have to say that I understand and appreciate all the Mary Poppins stories much better after reading this single, insightful page. The story itself? Classic Mary Poppins, as we have come to know her in the five preceding books, joined by many characters we have met before and one or two we haven’t, creates brief confusion and sets everything to rights.
