These are the stories of Britain#65533;s past that children in England, Scotland and Wales used to grow up on. Often discredited, in many cases virtually forgotten, they are nonetheless wonderful tales that will give present-day children a sense of the excitement of history. King Canute, Lady Godiva, Guy Fawkes, Bonnie Prince Charlie, Grace Darling and other famous names live again in these 100 tragic, comic, stirring tales of adventure, folly and wickedness. Spanning nearly three thousand years, and including stories as up-to-date as Live Aid and the Braer Oil Tanker disaster, each story includes a note on what really happened, and there is an index and a list of further reading. This is a unique book with a very wide appeal. It is not a history textbook, simply a collection of stories by a consummate children's writer who has retold in her own inimitable way 100 stories that children will enjoy. Richard Brassey#65533;s brilliant illustrations on every page bring the characters to life with wit, humour and fascinating period detail.… (más)

An interesting collection of stories, very good as a read a different one each night style for bedtime (most stories are two to three illustrated pages).
Be warned that these stories do contain violence - they don't skip over murders or executions where it is relevant to the story. And being true to British history, there is a fair amount of religion involved that while not of the preachy-Christianity-is-right kind of variety is still occasionally a bit obvious (at least in this household). Each story benefits by being an engaging story that also has a side box with a short explanation of the known facts of the event.
A good introductions to the myths and stories that underpin the British culture. Some may contain known names or events for your household, others might be revelations of stories you never knew, but all give a little insight into why Britain and the British think about themselves and their history the way they do.
