In India, chi sa quanti tra i lettori di Hesse lo sanno, lo scrittore non mise quasi piede.Il viaggio dal settembre al dicembre del 1911 lo portò invece a conoscere un lembo di Ceylon (il santuario buddista di Kandy e il monte e la penisola di Malacca, Kuala Lumpur,Singapore e Sumatra. L'India era il paese in cui i nonni e i genitori avevano lavorato come missionari, ma era anche l'altrove esotico nell'immaginario collettivo (lo è ancora, in verità). Hesse desidera ardentemente confrontarsi con la cultura antitetica a quella europea, riconoscendo alla civiltà indiana il presupposto, l'origine, la culla della spiritualità.
Di quell'esperienza consegna alle pagine descrizioni e riflessioni scrupolose, di ogni sua tappa e ogni suo spostamento registra emozioni e notizie su flora, fauna,gente.
Questo viaggio in Oriente ha il valore di un ritorno alle profondità della propria anima pur se incompleto, come rivelerà lo stesso scrittore anni dopo. Ma sarà fondamentale rivelazione e sollecitazione per gli studi e le opere successive. ( )
