Goodreads shows hundreds of reviews of This Side of Paradise; Librarything has none for this volume. Perhaps it's the edition. Paradise was a treat and a surprise. I suppose I read it in my 'teens, but who can remember? It turns out to be engrossing, artful, often very beautiful. It's a bildungsroman, but Amory Blaine isn't the only character who comes of age: the bildungsroman itself, as a genre, does. Fitzgerald had clearly read Portrait of the Artist and any number of other examples, but he managed, in his early twenties, to make his own fully achieved version. It's an amazing achievement. ( )
