Voihan tällaista lukea, jos ei ole muuta tekemistä. ( ) When Francie and Colt Hart take a Sunday drive out of New York City into the Pennsylvania countryside, they both see the house at the same time and fall in love with it for completely different reasons. For Francie, the house itself draws her into itself, whispering it's secrets and tantalizing her poet's heart. She feels she's finally "come home" and hopes to awaken her inspiration to write again. But Colt sees the historic house as a fine feather in his cap, a "summer place" to bring his power broker and stock trader buddies to show off. For Francie, it's a home. For Colt, it's a trophy, just another acquisition, another asset on his balance sheet. They buy the house for a song and discover that it has sat empty for over 25 years. It's sturdy and sound, but needs work and Francie hopes that it will finally be something that she and Colt can work on together. They've been married for 10 years and sometimes it seems they are almost strangers. Shortly after they move a few things in, the house begins to give up its secrets to Francie, and the more they discover about it, the farther apart it seems to drive them. When Francie discovers an old family cemetery hidden on the property, it somehow brings out qualities in each of them that come as a total surprise to the other. This is the story, not just of this couple, but of the house itself and its history. It's a story of finding home and finding out what the true character of those closest to you is all about. It's a quiet little book, with a few surprises sprinkled here and there. I enjoyed it. Kowalski has a way with words and knows how to turn a phrase, but this one wasn't nearly as enchanting as Eddie's Bastard (which was his first novel) was. I'll give it a 3.5. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
The Good Neighbour effortlessly weaves together the tragic stories of two families, hauntingly linked by whispers across the centuries. When Colt and Francie Hart stumble upon an empty, 150-year-old house during a weekend drive in the country, each of them falls in love and wants to buy it - for entirely different reasons. For Colt, the house will become a trophy to his enormous success at trading stocks. For Francie, a blocked poet, the house seems to offer a chance for her to reawaken her creativity. Yet the more the Harts learn about the house, its history and its previous inhabitants, the more it drives them apart. When they meet their new neighbour, a descendant of the house's original owners, they inadvertently start a war over Colt's plan to move the family cemetery off their property. Colt returns to the city, leaving Francie to deal with the angry neighbour, but the consequences of his actions follow him there - while at the same time old secrets of his own resurface, forcing him to confront his family -- and himself. Events that conspire to destroy their marriage could just as easily bring them together again, in this story of two people who, in looking for a place to call home, find themselves instead.
