Pleasantly surprised with this 'FREE' book (through Reddit) The prose flowed smoothly and I had trouble putting it down. It turns out that I like strong, muscular men as protagonists and strong muscular women as guards, helpers and intellectual guides. AND there was magic. ( )

Epic!

Loved this book on an epic scale! A real faulted hero that I just adored. So many character's storylines woven together into one awesome adventure. And a villain who is just creepy. Must read more!

Reader rated 14 for mild language, crude humor, mild sensuality, and mild torture. ( )

Gavin really is a bit of a slob - his eating habits are not pretty for a start - but he has something special about his character. He cares. The 4 volume series is full of credible imagination, real characters, both good and bad (and some very confused ones who need to be fixed somehow). There are demons, other realms, magic, fights, love, hate. . . . . All in all, the set makes an excellent read. ( )

Fairly typical of the fantasy genre, but an enjoyable, fast-moving read with plenty of action and adventure. The plot is simple and straightforward, without a lot of embellishment, but the protagonists are believable and engaging. The book opens with a scene guaranteed to make you want to read more. The reluctant hero stays reluctant, and his nobility outweighs his lowborn crassness, inspiring a somewhat gratuitous loyalty in those who follow him and his cause. I found the antagonist a little flat; for a man planning to take over the kingdom, his actions seem small and petty in scope and give no view of how he sees his future.

As another reviewer mentioned, the occasional crass comments from the male characters could have been omitted. They did nothing for the story and, in fact, detracted from the overall pace of the tale. Aside from that, I found May's style to be engaging and humorous, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. ( )

An excellent read, set in a believable Fantasy Land with real feeling characters. The plot was Intriguing, making it a "page turner". I am now looking forward to reading The Wayfarer King, book 2 in the Kingshield Legacy. Also Soul Sacrafice which is a Prequel, to Kingshiels. ( )
