In this book, Geary describes the early lives of two men -- future President Garfield and his assassin -- and how the two eventually entwined with tragic results. This was a particularly compelling book for me as I must confess that I knew nothing about the particulars of Garfield's assassination or the reasons behind it. Geary is, as always, excellent about laying out all the facts precisely, including all names, dates, and times. The illustration style is somewhat basic, as in all his books, but it works with his no-nonsense prose. ( )

Geary gives his reader a straightforward account of Guiteau's attack on Garfield, along with a description of what happened in their lives that brought them to that fatal point. Mixed in with the recitation of facts are Geary's amazing and detailed drawings and anecdotal asides that bring personality and a certain amount of sympathy to everyone involved.

he knows how to draw and tell a story. i didn't know anything about this story before. the looney was looney and he did get remembered. ( )

Another strong entry in Rick Geary's Treasury of Victorian Murder series. Although this volume is slighter, both in size and in artistic ambition, than other entries in the same series, Geary manages a more authentic period feel than he has delivered in the sister volumes, and his pen work is as strong, bold, and distinctive as ever. While this is certainly not the very best title in the series, it is certainly not a disappointment either - Geary has mastered the nuances of this material and his artwork is truly beautiful, so what's not to like?
