Engaged as tutor to the children of wealthy and ambitious sugar merchant, Mr Samuel Appleton, Robert Fairfax soon finds that his employer has other work of a more delicate nature for him to do. Appleton's beautiful daughter, Charlotte, has made a very good marriage to the notoriously rakish and thoroughly aristocratic Lord Mortlock - yet all is not well with the match previously backed so keenly by Appleton. Urged to investigate discreetly, Fairfax finds evidence of gambling debts, love affairs - and intrigue. When Lord Mortlock is found murdered in his bed, Fairfax urgently needs to find the answers to all his questions. One caveat that I have, not so much a criticism of the writing as a piece of information for readers, March has no qualms about breaking the reader's heart by killing off likable victims by murderers seemed appealing and whose crimes seem almost like a betrayal of trust. The solving of the crime doesn't necessary solve all the characters' problems; there is sometimes an aching sense of futility. I assume that readers know their own tastes.
I recommend this series to people who like novels that are as much historicals as mysteries. ( )
