Roselupin's father, the King, locks her away in a tower room to protect her from the wild and dangerous world. Roselupin longs to be out in the world she sees from her window. One day a golden box full of balls of wool shows up for Roselupin. The king laughs and dismisses the gift but Roselupin knits a red wolf suit that busts her out of the tower to see the world and frightens the king who thinks the wolf has eaten his daughter. When she returns to her normal size and shape, the king locks her in an even taller tower to protect her. Roselupin knits another costume especially for her father to wear, which turns out to be a mouse costume...

The Red Wolf by Margaret Shannon is a book about a King who had a daughter locked in a tower so nothing would happen to her. She was given a golden box as a gift for her seventh birthday. The box was full of different colors rolls of wool and the box had the words "knit what you want" The little girl knits a wolf outfit and is able to get out of the castle and explore freedom for a while. She was found and locked in the tower once again and this time she knitted a mouse outfit for her father which gave the story an interesting twist. ( )

Roselupin is kept shut up in a tower, not by a evil witch or stepmother, but by her own father, the king. She escapes, aided by magic, and lives freely for a while, but is eventually brought back to a new tower. Roselupin gets revenge on her father in hilarious fashion, turning the authoritarian monarch into a helpless mouse.

Genre: Fairy tale

Age appropriateness: primary, intermediate

Media: Watercolor, pastel, and colored pencil

Review: This is a good example of a fairy tale, because it is a about a princess who receives a gift that has magic power. The princess desires freedom and to see the world, but her father wants to keep her safe from the outside world. The princess goes on a journey that opens her eyes to the outside world and finds a way for her father to have a similar experience. ( )
