Fiction. Mystery. Historical Fiction. HTML:Alaska, 1935: Slippery Wilson is on his way out of town when he runs into a woman, her neice, and a crashed car. His life is about to get a lot more complicated.

It's 1935 and jobs are scarce, but Slippery Wilson walks off his job at a logging camp after a gruesome accident kills a coworker. He's headed for Seattle with all his savings; he plans to buy a piece of farmland and be his own boss.

When he stops to help a woman get her car out of a ditch, his life takes a serious detour. The woman is Ellie Hobbs, an anarchist from the docks of Seattle who watches out for her young niece and dreams of flying planes. But right now, she's got one busted nose and has just stuffed a dead man's body into the trunk of her car. So begins the action that will take Slip, Ellie, her niece, and her noisy yellow bird on a heart-stopping adventure up the Inside Passage from Puget Sound to Alaska.

This is the follow-up prequel to Cold Storage, Alaska. It is recommended that readers read Cold Storage, Alaska first, and then this title. This book tells the story of the mother of the two main characters in Cold Storage, Alaska. The book has a different feel, but it is a different story. ( )

Historical fiction set in 1935. Living with the possibility of achieving your dreams or perhaps just finding your next meal. Follow Slip, Ellie, Annabelle and the yellow bird from Puget Sound to Alaska as they run from revenge & the police. A cast of complex characters buoyed by the undercurrent of hope. ( )

I prefer Cold Storage, the crummy yet cosy village story, over this noirish march up the Pacific Northwest. I did appreciate the street level view of labor issues in the mid '30s. I think that's the best part of the book. I didn't much enjoy being stuck on a small boat with these characters, cold and wet for most of the time. Might have been worth it for the description of raking a fire aside on the beach so they could sleep on the warm dry sand. That was delightful to imagine. Far too much cold salt water. ( )

I started reading this, but after a few chapters with annoying characters, and an annoying plot, I gave up. It may improve if I stuck with it, but life is too short for badly written books.

This book was addictive. Easy to put down at first what with too much flowery (i.e., adjetives) language. The story was compelling which lead to it being read and getting a good rating. Nice ending as well. ( )
