Foreword.
The Turn of the Tide covered the first eighteenth months of Lord Alanbrooke's term as Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee.

Prelude.
In the first week of September, 1943, a letter reached the Chief of the Imperial General Staff from the victorious general who had been his right-hand man in the retreat to Dunkirk and whom just over a year before he had chosen to command a defeated army in the Western Desert.
