In 1935, thirteen-year-old fledgling writer Briony Tallis and her family live a life of wealth and privilege in their enormous mansion. On the warmest day of the year, the country estate takes on an unsettling hothouse atmosphere, stoking Briony's vivid imagination. Robbie Turner, the educated son of the family's housekeeper, carries a torch for Briony's headstrong older sister Cecilia. He hopes that Cecilia has comparable feelings. Basato sul romanzo best seller di Ian McEwan (2001), questo film della seconda guerra mondiale comprende 4 parti e racconta una storia di amore tragico. Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley), una giovane aristocratica inglese e Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), figlio promettente della governante, laureata a Oxford, grazie alla generosità del padre di Cecilia, sono legati l'un l'altro nonostante la loro differenza nella classe sociale. Poco dopo che i due rivelano i loro sentimenti reciproci, sono costretti a subire le conseguenze di una bugia infantile: la sorella minore di Cecilia, Briony, che pensa di vedere Robbie maltrattare sua sorella.
