Four principal chapters tackle four aspects of society which at present give rise to profound anxiety amongst those who have their fellow citizens well-being at heart. Must the work to be done in a modern economy be soul destroying or can it be a real fulfillment? Is there a way out of the competitive scramble for more material wealth? Can private enterprise be made to serve the public good? How do we achieve consensus as a basis for the collaboration needed in an interdependent society? A further chapter examines what the individual can do to help build a better society.
