This is the first, and in many ways the finest collection of classic Gahan Wilson. His style may be related both to Charles Addams, who came before him at The New Yorker, or to Edward Gorey, who was more prone to books, or booklets as it were -- but Wilson is a true original. My favourite cartoon in this entire collection is not the title one, but a vignette where an elderly couple is seen aboard a train pulling into a station whose platform sign is "NOWHERE." The old woman nudges her partner: "We're here, dear!"

An excellent assortment of Wilson's macabre and demented cartoons. It definitely helps to be at least a little demented yourself to fully enjoy any of his work. ( )

This is a good collection of several of Gahan Wilson's earlier (pre-1977) cartoons, work that was originally published in Playboy, National Lampoon, Audubon (!), and the New York Times. As another reviewer has stated, there are some real gems here. Not all are quite so funny (and a couple I didn't "get", I'm embarassed to confess). But for the most part, they show the characteristically macabre and irreverent sense of humor for which Wilson is famous.

One positive feature of a book like this over some recent compilations is that the cartoons are reprinted in their original, full - page size. Long out of print, this book is worth having in a collection of Gahan Wilson's material. ( )

A collection of Gahan Wilson's macabre comic panels. Wilson is what made it possible for Gary Larson to thrive later, but he certainly wasn't as consistently funny. Lots of gems here, though. ( )
