The story takes place in approximately 2000 from the perspective of the early 80s. The hero of the story, Lionel, is a professional concert pianist, who has a twin brother, Leo, who seems to do mysterious work for the US State Department. The brothers are in a helicopter crash and in order for one of them to survive, doctors use experimental neurosurgery to combine parts of their remaining brains, which is the only science fictional element of the plot. When the patient awakens, it is the pianist brother who has been saved. When several different people try to kill him, he finds himself fighting back, and using skills he knows he never learned. Lionel is in control of the body, and gradually realizes that he can access Leo's memories. Aided by flashes of memory, helpful strangers, and tantalizing clues in his brother's correspondence, he realizes he must complete the spy's last mission for him.
I have always been a fan of spy novels, and this one is both a neat science fiction twist on an old saw, and a pretty darned good spy novel, too. ( )
