Every now and then there will be authors that are not afraid to stretch their imagination. Kai Meyer is full of creative when it comes to stories.

Pirate Curse has potential. Their non-stop fast moving action which a few twists. The story is set in the Caribbean and is quit historically accurate. The world feels familiar but, there a touch of magic. The writing is simple, it could be a little more complex and maybe darker. There wasn't must tension unlit the second half of the book.

Characters 4/5 for the first book not bad. There still can be some improvement.

Eine schöne Geschichte um das Piratenmädchen Jolly, deren Schiff durch einen heimtückischen Trick angegriffen wird und daraufhin als verschollen gilt. Nur Jolly kann sich sicher an das Ufer retten, denn sie ist eine der letzten Quappen, deren besondere Eigenart es ist über das Wasser laufen zu können. Bald macht sie sich auf die Suche nach der Crew, die für sie ihre Familie ist, und muss dabei feststellen, dass der Anschlag auf ihr Schiff womöglich ihr selbst gegolten hat. Mit teils zweifelhaften Gefährten beginnt eine Reise quer durch die Karibik.

Als Zielpublikum würde ich eher jüngere Jugendliche betiteln, für Erwachsene ist das Buch ein nettes Piratenabenteuer mit einigen schönen phantastischen Elementen. Richtige Spannung bietet das Buch eher nicht, es verleitet eher zum Rückblick in Kindheitsträume und ist eine einfach schöne Lektüre. ( )

Adventure on the high seas, with pirates, magic and mysterious men in capes. I didn't get into this and have not picked up book three but suspect it would appeal to pre-teen boys and girls.

The Wave Runners is the first book in an exciting, fantasy-adventure trilogy. Mr. Meyer meshes an exotic Caribbean setting, dangerous, swash-buckling pirates and intriguing fantastical creatures to create an exciting tale.

We follow the story of Jolly, a 14 year old polliwiggle (someone who can walk on water). Jolly could be the last surviving polliwiggle and is certainly a key to to defeating evil forces that threaten the Caribbean.

Be warned, the ending of this book leaves many questions unanswered and will draw readers to (Part 2) The Shell Magicians like pirates to treasure.
