I can can relate and remember driving cross country with my father and stopping for late night early morning breakfast at the vintage diners, ordering pigs in a blanket. Many a child will be able to relate to this tale of father and son and the bestowing of traditional values in America. I believe this particular book is written with a Midwestern mindset and Americana, as where else can you stop the car on a straightaway with open prairies abound and stare at the moonlight. Either way, the expressive muted night illustrations of the moon, hills, diner, and mountains gives an almost surreal picture of a child's rural midwestern upbringing, but not any taste of suburban, or urban life. This book is about a father and a son going on a trip to the Mountains and they drive at night. I this book because I have done some night driving with my family. I would use this book in my classroom because the students can relate to it from other trips they gone on. This book would be great for fourth and fifth graders. ( )
