David works in a prison teaching prisoners to read. His step father is the warden and they live just outside the electrified fence. David usually doesn't see prisoners in a sexual way until Elliot Law is incarcerated at the Maximum security facility and assigned to him as his assistant. Elliot Law is a murderer, at least that's what his file says, and David knows he should fight this attraction he has for him. But Elliot Law claims that he's been framed for a murder he didn't commit, and suddenly, incredible circumstances allow Law to escape. He takes David as a hostage, insisting that David help him prove his innocence. David is at the same time terrified of him, and drawn to him. To David, Elliot Law is a murderer with the face of an angel, and the heart of a monster...or is he?… (más)

I think I'm a spoilt M/M reader, when I find a story I like I always would like for it to be a little longer (no pun intended...).

David is a 24 years old lit teacher. He is the stepson of the warden of an high security prison, and even if his stepfather hates him, he has given him a job inside the prison. Usually David feels no attraction for the cons, but when he lays his eyes on Elliot, he is a kept man. Elliot is a 26 years old man framed of the murder of a young hustler. They say it was a passion crime, but Elliot, even if he has a cocky attitude, seems not capable of the horrible crime. But David has no time to have his own opinion on the man cause soon after he meets him, Elliot escapes from the prison and takes him as hostage. He says he is paied from David's stepfather to kill him and also he claims to be innocent from his crime. Now David has to decide if believe him or betray him...

Both David than Elliot are not dominant characters. Sure, Elliot is a little more hungry and he is the leader of the story, but I don't feel him like a dictatorial man. And David could be a bit more emotional, but not for this reason, weaker.

The story is pretty short, less than 90 pages, but I like the setting and also the supporting characters (I have a feeling for Shawn, the mafia boss, and Samuel, the detective...). Despite the previous works by D.J. Manly I have read, it's a little less erotic and a bit more suspence, but, no worries, you will find your one or two hot sex scenes which are Manly's fabric mark.

This book had all the ingredients and potential to make a great story. The characters had interesting backgrounds and personalities.
One thing that was lacking sadly, was the pacing. Everything was rushed and most scenes were written off and cut short. A lot of those scenes skipped and passed over could have added to the development of the story, especially in the beginning.
I lost track of the characters I liked at the start around the middle of the book. It went downhill a little from there. The intrigue, if it can be called that, was rather average and non-original. The sex scenes were very mediocre and totally unimpressive. They had nothing of the tension that was there between the two characters at the beginning. The ending, although very predictable, was also too fast and mostly skipped over.
Given maybe twice the amount of pages it had, it could have been great if the author had taken more care. It wasn't bad but it came up short in my opinion. ( )
