Using the Hindu myth of the dancing Shiva, the Hindu god of creation and destruction, this Quaker biochemist recognizes and explores the necessity of both destruction and creation in life, individuals, the ecosystem, and our social lives. It is a wise and powerful image, and worth exploring more in our contemporary world. Written in 1976, there are out-of-date information and ideas here as well as some still valid and even prescient. The challenge to appreciate the reality and holiness of the dancing Shiva is perennial, and begs for updating to understand our present situations. ( )
