This is my first Anita Shreve book, and it is her best-selling book because Oprah picked it. I cannot see why. The story starts when Kathryn receives the news that her husband's transatlantic flight has exploded off the coast of Ireland, but this news is only the beginning of discovery for her about who her husband really was. There is the exploration of grief, family relationships, parenting and how Kathryn deals with this unraveling of life as she knows it.

At the end of course things resolve and wounds start to heal, but there is a small matter of the helping hand that Kathryn receives. The author conjures up for her out of this total disaster a miracle man, someone too good to be true. He plays the piano (like she loves to do), cooks her lobsters and is beside her as she faces the cruelest of her husband's betrayals. Robert is an ex husband himself and a recovering alcoholic, but it is obvious that he cares very much for her. There is little hint at romance in the story but I can very well imagine her falling for him, I would too.

This book was gorgeously written, emotionally gripping, and overall a hauntingly beautiful novel on loss and love and rediscovering people we think we once knew. I don't know what the hell everyone else read because this novel was wonderful and the twists about the pilot's life did not seem contrived at all. Oh well. Still loved it. ( )

When I first started reading this book, it seemed familiar. I thought I might have read it before. As I continued through I was certain. Yet it was worth reading a second time. I did not remember some significant details, and it was enjoyable to read.

Kathryn Lyons hears a knock on the door in the middle of the night. Her husband Jack is a pilot, so it is a call she has feared over the years. And yes, he has gone down with his plane.

The person bringing the news is a union representative, Robert Hart. He made tracks to get there before the official airline representatives did, to make sure, it appears, that Kathryn does not say anything that would suggest that Jack did anything inappropriate before the flight. He tells her he is there to support her.

Kathryn soon learns that there is some question of why the plane went down, and that her husband may have had something to do with it. That it may have been suicide. Kathryn can't believe this possibility. As time goes on she happens upon odd little things that suggest that Jack was not the person she thought he was.

The story is very much about Jack but perhaps even more about how to grieve. We don't ever really know someone else. ( )

Interesting web of a story that played out. Just when you thought it ended, it all came unraveled. ( )

Jack, Kathryn & Mattie Lyons have learned to live with a schedule that is not easy or normal. Jack's flights keep him away from his family for days, sometimes weeks, at a time. Mattie and Jack have a most loving relationship as father and daughter. Mattie sometimes rebels a little at her mother and seems more at ease with her father.
At one in the morning, Kathryn has to answer the door to a man who informs her that Jack has been involved in a crash over Ireland and that they have lost him and 104 others on the plane. Kathryn's world has fallen apart.
There are rumors that Jack committed suicide and therefore took the lives of the others on purpose. Kathryn can not fathom that that could be true. So she starts to do a little bit of soul-searching and researching on her own.
Her world then starts really crumbling. She finds out things about her husband that she never knew. And was she married to the man that she thought he was?

Really good writing. This book had me gripped from the very beginning. ( )
