I went into this novel totally prepared to like it. It had such a cute premise! Nothing bad or objectionable in it; it just didn't have much sparkle. The professor was actually kind of a cardboard character, and Lucille's transition from "I'm not sure I can stand this job in this primitive place with this ridiculous man for more than a couple of weeks" to "I wish I was back there...in that lovely house...with that great professor" was just too quick and unexplained. The mystery was kind of halfhearted. Easy, light reading, but not too engaging. Unfortunately. ( )

Charming old-fashioned romance. I've always liked this author, used to read her years ago, thought I'd try another one of hers and enjoyed it it. ( )

It doesn't quite stick the landing at the end, but I still really enjoyed this one. The characters are amusing. ( )

Delightful sweet old fashioned sort of story. A great escape for me in the midst of chaos. I was whisked away to a kinder gentler time. Lovely. ( )

The perfect quarantine read for readers desperate for distraction and diversion from nothing but bad news days. A little bit zany. A little bit romantic. A little bit humorous. All fun and a little bit of froth but touched by insightful examination of a feminist woman whose curiosity, generosity, and inability to say no get her into to over committed positions and somewhat tight corners.

Anyone partial to English humor, as I am, will enjoy this mid-century novel whose only purpose seems to be a determination to regale the reader with the machinations of a delightful cast of characters with the emphasis perfectly placed on the heroine and hero whose verbal sword fights may only be matched by a brusque friend to them both. Believe me, there are enough "wits" to go around in this book.

if you don't have a comfy overstuffed easy chair in which to curl up and read this novel, it's worth the money to go out and buy one! Recommend for the simple delightful warmth and fast paced easy pleasure of a lighthearted story dedicated to anyone who numbers among the Readers for the Sheer Pleasure of It. ( )
