Thugh this was written in 1896, it might be described briefly as a comic parody of the Titanic disaster. Two very sensible middle-aged American widows on a Pacific cruise have their ship hit by another --the rest of the passengers and crew go off in lifeboats; the two women and one man set off in another boat and end up marooned on a very comfortable previously though not currently inhabited island, where tey are joined by others. St. Barts 2013 #6 - A delightful little romp of unexpected pleasure! Not overly deep, but what fun. Also a pleasant surprise in that it was grabbed randomly for my island vacation and i had no idea that part of this tale takes place on a tropical island! Stockton is well-known for his story 'Lady or the Tiger' but i was totally unprepared for the 'laugh out loud' moments in this book. I know there are a few other Stockton books at home in the shelf that I will seek out soon. Highly recommended!! ( )

This is the story of two widows who decide to visit the son of one of them in Japan. Their ship breaks up in a storm but they manage to make it to safety on a nearby island with the help of a young Mr Craig.

A very nice Victorian story with illustrations. Mrs. Lecks and Mrs. Aleshine are two middle-aged women who become castaways on British island and have adventures. The most amazing thing to me is that this story is still re-published today! ( )

I was on my way from San Francisco to Yokohama when in a very desultory and gradual manner I became acquainted with Mrs. Lecks and Mrs. Aleshine.
