Discovered by her foster parents when she was about four during the Chicago fire of 1871, the book opens when she is sixteen years old and forced to go out on her own when her foster mother dies. She stays at a boardinghouse where she meets Effie Cunningham who later helps her to find a job at Harrison Colby's, a large department store. There she meets Greg Colby, the handsome son and heir of the store owner. At first she tries to deny her feelings for him, but eventually they both realize that they are in love. Not even the disapproval from Greg's family will stand in their way. But then Jamie, Lissa's foster brother, returns from abroad and wants to marry her. She tells him that they "love each other but are not in love with each other." He then falls in love with Effie and returns to sea again. At the end, Lissa goes to a ball with Greg in an effort to win his family over. Their plan is discovered but Lissa also finds out who she really is and from where she came.… (más)

I read this book as a young girl in grade school and the story was so compelling that I couldn't forget it and 40 years later I had to track down the book and re-read it. Thanks to my librarian friend for helping me.

The story is about a young girl who is separated from her family during the great San Francisco fire. She can't tell the people that find her her name. The story goes on to show how her life proceeds and how she is finally re-united with her family as a young adult. ( )

A finger of sunlight pushed its way between the taller buildings across the street and through the uncurtained window behind Lissaa to fall on the cot where she had spread out her few possessions.
