Young and Fair. Originally Published 1963. Author Rosamond du Jardin. Lissa Powell has always wondered who she really was. Discovered by her foster parents when she was about four during the Chicago fire of 1871, the book opens when she is sixteen years old and forced to go out on her own when her foster mother dies. She stays at a boardinghouse where she meets Effie Cunningham who later helps her to find a job at Harrison Colby's, a large department store. There she meets Greg Colby, the handsome son and heir of the store owner. At first she tries to deny her feelings for him, but eventually they both realize that they are in love. Not even the disapproval from Greg's family will stand in their way. But then Jamie, Lissa's foster brother, returns from abroad and wants to marry her. She tells him that they "love each other but are not in love with each other." He then falls in love with Effie and returns to sea again. At the end, Lissa goes to a ball with Greg in an effort to win his family over. Their plan is discovered but Lissa also finds out who she really is and from where she came.
