John Wayne’s last movie is a dignified, thoughtful Western, heartbreakingly close to the Duke’s actual situation and very cunning in its use of Wayne’s screen persona to fill in the background of the character he plays here....The Duke's last hurrah is one of the very best of a cycle of 70s movies that served as obituaries for the Western itself. ...third in a wave of geriatric Westerns that have afforded new employment for the wrinkles and creases of John Wayne.... John Wayne, James Stewart and Lauren Bacall all possess that particular mystery of performance that allows them to touch us even when they are ridiculous. But Mr. Siegel's lack of form and fidelity to his own story means that as the movie proceeds, even those things that are charming turn to lead. He rides onscreen in The Shootist afraid that he is dying. Not afraid he'll be killed, but afraid he's dying, which is the last thing we anticipated a John Wayne character would do of his own accord. It is 1901: He has outlived his century.... The cast is excellent because it understands the material, and sympathizes with it: James Stewart, as the doctor, and Lauren Bacall, as the widow, play scenes with Wayne that absolutely make us forget we're watching a movie. Gaunt old John Carradine has been an undertaker all his life; finally they cast him as one. Don Siegel's direction reveals a sensitivity we didn't suspect after films like Dirty Harry. And observe the way John Wayne says "Good day, Mrs. Rogers" to Lauren Bacall for the last time.
