An accessible biography of one of France's greatest heroes and the world's most enigmatic persons: Joan of Arc. With a straight-forward, objective tone, the author tells of Joan's rise from peasant girl to symbolic leader of the French Army. The book downplays the spiritual side to Joan (her 'voices' ) and, instead, portrays a plucky girl with a vision to save her country from the hated English. A great read for lovers of medieval history and military conquests as well as a cautionary tale for the 'cult of personality' (Joan's rise and fall is quick and devastating.) (
